Emergent Waste Solutions Inc. Offers Solution to Nitrogen Dilemma

Vancouver, B.C. June 23, 2022 – Emergent Waste Solutions Inc. (“EWS” or “the Company”), has submitted a response to the Federal Government’s call for comments on their Discussion Document, created to stimulate discussion and lead to a shared understanding of how Canada can reach its 30% fertilizer emissions reduction target.

The Company recognizes that the Canadian government is caught between two high-pressure forces: the need to reduce climate emissions, and the need to maintain crop yields in the face of nitrogen reductions in fertilizer application. The agriculture sector believes that the Federal Government’s decision will significantly reduce crop yields, create economic hardships for their industry, and jeopardize food security. On the other side, those convinced of imminent climate disaster are pressuring the government to take this bold step of reducing the application of nitrogen in the environment.

Based on extensive research, EWS is convinced that our biochar can be a solution that satisfies the concerns of both sides to this issue. The application of biochar in conjunction with fertilizer application can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the fertilizer, and on the N2O, much of which is usually lost through leaching, volatilization, denitrification, immobilization, and clay fixation.

Company CEO, Kevin Hull, said “we believe that replacing a portion of the nitrogen with biochar will make the fertilizer application more effective, and will not only maintain crop yields but will enhance yields. Additionally, soil health will be improved, and a measure of drought resistance will be introduced.”

EWS proposes that Agriculture Canada incentivize the purchase of biochar, either at the farm, or at the point where fertilizer is manufactured. GHG emissions will be reduced both through the creation of the biochar and in the reduction of N2O. This will mitigate the financial losses the fertilizer companies may be facing and will see the farmers maintain their financial outlook.

Kevin commented further, “the federal government can not only solve its immediate challenge with nitrogen, but in doing so it can give a significant boost to the burgeoning biochar industry here in Canada, making us a world leader in the research, production, and application of biochar. Biochar can create economic activity, employ workers in well-paid positions, and contribute significantly to the goals Canada has committed to in climate change mitigation.”
